This is what I call a 'deep' book, very informative. In some cases I have never heard the parables explained as Fr. Rutler does. He presents some in a new light and I have to read it twice to make sure I have gotten all the gems in the stories. I am reading this for Lent, but will continue to see the parables in a new way long after Lent is over. Fr. Rutler is a brilliant writer. I sent this book to family and to two priests that are getting new ideas for their sermons! Anyone who wants to better understand the parables of Christ will love this book.
An engaging treatment of the parables. I first saw Fr. Rutler's take on them during his television exposition on EWTN; the show was such that you had to focus all attention and listen to every word - so full of rich insight were the commentaries. The book gives you this in a way that makes it easy to study and derive those hints of heaven contained in Christ's parables.
Fr. Rutler is a gifted writer and preacher. His explanation of the Gospel brings meaning to everyday experiences. He enables all people to live what was taught by Christ. His book is informative and causes the reader to reflect continually upon the parables. Larry Casey
I won't dive into the content here, you'll get that when you read it, so I'll restrict my comments.First, Fr. Rutler's prose are beautiful and full.Second, don't rush through this.This is a short book and the first time I read it I just blew through it. When I got to the end I realized that as profound as I found much of it, I could repeat very little of that which I found perfound.So I have been working through it a second time and keeping notes. I am digesting a lot of more it and finding even more depth than I had the first time.It might be a good idea to take a couple parables each Sunday, or weekend, and read then reflect on them in light of what Fr. Rutler has written. I don't have anyone to discuss them with so I have been keeping my thoughts in a Word document and find the writing, then reviewing, a very gratifying experience.
This is really good stuff! It's not something you can read while dozing off. Bring your 'A' game to this book and give it all your attention while reading it. Fr. Rutler...thank you.
I totally loved this book. We used it in our book club at our church. It is a hard read so I bought the audio and read along. The author is highly educated and has many experiences to draw from. The audio helped me get what he was saying as I read along. Those who read it on their own did not like it at all. I loved it and really learned a lot from this author view points.
For Fr. Rutler fans, this is classic Rutler, in that the topic of each parable acts simply as a springboard toward a grander reflection on life, the universe and all that, akin to his old eclectic history column in Crisis magazine. Four stars and not five, however, if you were hoping for a more focused, penetrating theological analysis of the parables themselves.
At times acerbic and clearly desiring a return to some of the older ritual, Fr. Rutler delivers a brief but demanding view of Jesus's parables. Not for those weak in vocabulary or the faith a thorough reading demands a return to Catholic teaching at its most basic and profound. Well worth reading.
