Enjoyable read, but dialogue is a bit lightweight. Seems a tad sophomoric. Found myself skimming paragraphs just to get to the point. I would NEVER have done that with a Cornwell novel. Read for fun. But don't expect the engrossed experience of "falling into the book".I'm on vacation and downloaded the first three books in anticipation of finding another Bernard Cornwell. These are "okay" but I can easily put them down and not pick them back up for days. They are not painful to read, but I often think to myself , "This is kinda silly!"Hope these get better. I've got 2 more of these novels to read before I decide to purchase the 4th installment. I really WANT to like them. I hungry for a great series.
In this review I will comment on both the publication of the physical book and also the contents of the book.PUBLICATIONFew, if any reviews, comment on the publication of the book and its physical qualities.I have bought the hardcover US 1st edition of the book published by Thomas Dunne Books, an imprint of St Martin's Press. This edition is 8.6 inches tall, a full 1 inch shorter than a normal hardcover book which is about 9.5 inches tall. The UK edition published by Headline is the full 9.5 inches tall, based on the Amazon information, so if you are a stickler like myself about building a consistent book collection, you'll want to make sure you're buying either the US Thomas Dunne editions or the UK Headline editions.As far as I can tell, Headline has produced every single UK version of the book in consistent sizing up until the present volume -- not so for the US editions however. If you search for Simon Scarrow on the Thomas Dunne books website, you will see that they only publish the first six books. After that, we see that a new publisher called The Overlook Press, an imprint of Harry N Abrams books. Their first published Eagle book is called The Zealot, which is the American title of the UK book called The Eagle in the Sand. If you look up The Zealot book on Amazon you will see it having been pelted with negative reviews as reviewers were confused into thinking it was a new book, only to realize it's the US version of The Eagle in the Sand.Given that the Headline UK edition of Under the Eagle is currently like $100, I've decided to buy the US editions of the books as much as possible (I was able to get the hardcover Thomas Dunne US edition of Under the Eagle for about 6 dollars total including shipping). The book is a nicely bound hardcover with solid pages that probably won't yellow, so I'm pleased with the purchase and plan to get the other 5 US editions published by Thomas Dunne.From there I plan to buy The Zealot, The Centurion, and The Gladiator from The Overlook Press (the publisher on Amazon is usually listed as Harry N Abrams, but, again, they're the same thing) though from there I'm not sure what I will do. The next book that The Overlook Press claims to have published is Brothers in Blood, which is a few books after The Gladiator. They apparently did not publish US versions of The Legion, Praetorian, or The Blood Crows. In Amazon reviews for The Zealot, Scarrow himself answered one of the reviewers saying that prior to the publishing of The Zealot in 2014, The Eagle in the Sand did not have a US release. I guess I can deduce that The Legion, Praetorian, and The Blood Crows have not yet had a US release, as well as the books after Brothers in Blood. Unless if I'm missing something. I've sent an email to Scarrow on his website to clarify exactly which books were published as US editions and who the publishers were. To sum up:US Editions and their US Publishers1. NO US EDITION - The Blood of Rome (2018)I think it's strange that The Overlook Press/Harry N Abrams published Brothers in Blood but not the three before it, which leads me to think I'm missing something, but it's so hard figuring out this publishing information that that's the extent of my knowledge.CONTENTS (****SPOILERS****)As for the book itself, I think it's a bit uneven. Analyzing the structure of the book, I believe it actually consists of two independent short stories, the first being The Ambush in Germany, the second being The Search for the Missing Wagon. The second story has nothing to do with the first, which I think is unfortunate plotting. Indeed, since after the rescue of Vitellius' legion from the Germans, all the plotlines are resolved and the book seems ended, the next part of the book feels like a wholly new story, so I think it's best to treat it that way. Here Scarrow introduces an element of mystery, which I think is handled clumsily, and it's far less interesting than the tactical/logistical story of the Roman army we get in the first half. Now we have the introduction of Claudius' freedman Narcissus, a thief in the dark, a missing scroll, and other cloak and dagger elements. There's also a running plotline of Cato getting laid which seems to be filler material but I guess it advances the mystery plot too. This second story really starts to pick up once we're dealing with tactics/logistics again and Vespasian's army encounters the Britons. There's a sense of poetry I just realized in Vitellius being saved by Vespasian in the first story, while Vitellius saves Vespasian in the second -- Bravo, Scarrow!Another thing that I noticed was that this is very much a story of a couple of Tommies in Roman garb. Indeed, as an American, I can't help notice Macro's extreme Britishness, which also comes out whenever Fabia speaks. Perhaps this is less apparent for a British audience, but the British dialogue is quite evident throughout, which isn't too immersion breaking, but it is very amusing.Overall, I would say that Scarrow is at his best when it comes to detailing the life of a soldier and describing military operations at the tactical and logistical level. He succeeds at conveying the impression of a battlefield populated by thousands of men. He is acute to the concerns of digging tents, moving men and material from point A to point B, of polishing armor, of men being hungry, of fear, of happiness at pleasant weather, etc. Thus, Scarrow has created realistic characters and environments and I hope the rest of the books deliver upon these successes.But once again, I think Scarrow's mystery plot was handled clumsily and I totally lost interest during those parts, wanting to get back into the military action. I also hope that the novels after this one have better plotting and pacing, such that the second half of the book is better connected to the first and all the plotlines aren't resolved until the last page.
Don't waste your time. I bought the first Under the Eagle book in the Kindle format one month ago. When I went to buy the second book I found the price had more than tripled. If you have any interest in reading the whole series, the Kindle format ends at book 6 of 16 books. Very disappointing when you take the time to read an entire book and find yourself in some kind of scam between the author and Amazon.
There have been some negative reviews of these books here. That is why I downloaded a sample. It was enough to convince me that the Eagle Series is very good. I'm already on the 3rd installment, When The Eagle Hunts. It's a great story, with great characters, and is very well written. At $7.99 a book, they'd better be. The author does use contemporary colloquialisms, but I think it just makes reading so much easier. It was a bit awkward for a page or two, then I didn't notice anymore, and actually started enjoying it. Love these books.

You have no training or experience, yet due to a political maneuver, you begin as second in command to a Centurion who leads 80 men into battle.Quintus Licinius Cato, a new recruit who was conscripted into the Second Legion (the toughest Legion in the Roman army), learned upon arrival that the Emperor had ordered he be a Centurion. Titus Flavius Sabinus Vespasian, Commander or Legate of the Second Legion, decided to appoint Cato as Optio, the second in command to a Centurion. Cato pleaded with his Centurion, Lucius Cornelius Macro, to be a regular foot soldier, but Macro was unwilling to change an imperial directive.Under the Eagle is a historical novel about the Roman Legions in the first century A.D. The Second Legion is stationed in Gaul where they guard the Rhine river (Rome's northeastern border). Several months after Cato arrives the Second Legion is ordered to deploy to the shore of the Atlantic Ocean to join an army preparing to invade Britain.Most of the events in this novel occur while Cato is training to be a legionnaire, and during the preparations for the invasion. The book details the training program endured by all new recruits, and exposes the conditions of life with the legions. Under The Eagle explains the ranks, equipment, and discipline, expected in a legion. The book even details the process of equipment maintenance and supply. The paper work expected of all Centurions is burdensome.Under The Eagle highlights clothing and equipment issue, which reminds me of the beginning of my military duty. There is the same tossing of general sizes - "you will grow into them, one size fits all, no complaints, no exchanges." bellows the supply officer. Thinking of my own military experience, I noticed similar rough treatment by training officers - the same impatience. Similarities abound in training - while learning tasks, they give a short demonstration and enforce multiple practice sessions until all is perfect.The novel details battle strategy. In one skirmish, the first battle in the book, the officer in charge messes up and the cohort has to adjust to an enemy of overwhelming numbers. The officer's battle strategy served as a negative example for all the legionaries involved.My one disappointment with this novel is some of the language that does not fit the time in history: "look bloody harder then", "having said that", "at the end of the day" are used as conjunctions, explicatives, and transitions.I recommend this book to lovers of historical novels. This is especially good for those who enjoy studying the Roman military.
