Suzi's book is awesome! So easy to understand the instructions and the projects are great. Anyone can benefit from buying this book - experienced artists to beginners as she really details the instructions on how to create. I urge you though to use your imagination and not copy cat the work. Make your own way with your art. Use her methods for creating, but then create your own. Suzi is also very funny with a dry sense of humor so the writing was a fun read. I'm an experienced artist but really wanted to learn HOW to do a face right. I will incorporate her method in my own art but I will make it my own. Really a great book!
I think the title of this book should be something like "The Eyes of Folk Art"!! The best part are the instructions and tips on drawing eyes. I did learn alot about eyes. Those instructions are very good. The book is interesting enough to read through but my style and Suzi Blu's are not the same. With that in mind, I can't say I liked this book. It's mostly folk art and drawing folk art people. Most of the pictures are rather folk-artsy. I wish I had known that before I bought it. I certainly couldn't tell by the cover. There's lots of pictures with faces and big expressive eyes. It's just not my style. Some of you may like that so this book may be just what you're looking for. I wish she had some modern or just several types of faces and drawings besides the folk art. Another thing that bothered me: she encourages us to draw our animal "furbabies" in our paintings and writes a line or two about how their bodies need not be proportional. She says the more quirky, misshapen and unrealistic they are, the cuter. But she doesn't give a hint how to draw an animal. It would have been nice if she at least showed us a basic shape to begin or gave some instruction how to draw such furbabies. Just like a beginner learning to draw eyes, I need some starting point. Why mention it and put several pictures of them in the book if she's not going to teach us? I tried to draw one like hers but then I couldn't tell for sure just what I drew! My dog didn't look any different than my cat! The book is about 123 pages with some resources and 2 templates. There's some instructions on what to use as background as well as using beeswax but I didn't find the info very interesting or inspiring. There's a section titled Student Gallery with pictures of more folk art people drawn by others that I assume are her students! I like the bright colors in the book and I like that she encourages us to use and draw with her templates, as long as we're clear what is her work and what can be legally sold/labeled as our own art. So many authors want to squelch that type of thing. I was really looking for mixed-media books and happened on this but there's not much mixed-media in it so I'm still looking. I'll keep it handy as a reference for the info on drawing eyes and that is what value I found in it. That's why I gave it 4 stars.
This book is wonderful and full of information. The pictures are amazing. Certainly makes you want to start drawing right away-I am just learning to draw so I got some of Suzi's stamps. They are fabulous too. I am 63 and can't draw a stick figure but learning with Suzi has helped tremendously to get over my fears and try. And I'm doing pretty good-it takes practice and thats fun now. Thanks Amazon for carrying this book.
I love the book and just realized after looking through it numerous times the information about online content is in the inside cover of the book with publication information :o Might be useful information for others who thought it was left out. The instructions are precise and simple to follow. I am enjoying it and look forward to checking out the online information!

This book has captivated my heart and soul. The colors and detailed photographs pulled me in immediately but it's the nuts & bolts of how to get down to the business of creating that got me to stay. Unlike so many mixed media book authors Suzi Blu delivers on how to both inspire and to help others so inclined along the way by providing detailed suggestions/instructions with corresponding clear (emphasis on clear) images. One of the things I most liked about Suzi Blu's book is that it encourages without being cloying or overly sentimental. She delivers her message through what comes across as a natural tone (i.e., direct and encouraging) that I have found in the most sincere of teachers. Her work is beautiful and while she offers guidelines on how to create similar pieces, her authentic voice and instructions encourage others to find their own style. Her work is truly mesmerizing and I feel forever captivated and inspired. My favorite book among my vast (and mostly useless) mixed media collection. I hope this is the beginning of much more inspiration coming from Suzi Blu.
I've never taken a mixed media class and so I didn't know any techniques used in mixed media. As others have said, the book is wonderful eye candy and it inspires my imagination. What I like most is that the book comes with a DVD where Suzi Blu further demonstrates how to do her mixed media techniques. I really needed that as I am a visual learner. On the DVD, Suzi Blu explains that although she gives you templates for her own designs and recommends that you go ahead and copy what she has done so that you can learn first, she says that eventually you will develop your own style of art. She has included some of her student's artwork and you can clearly see that some have already developed their own styles.I purchased the book not only to learn mixed media, but to also learn how to create the "fairy-like" quality you see in her paintings. Her art reminds me of the art of other artists that I admire including the art of Stephen Mackey which you can see in Jane Yolen's book, The Fairies' Ring. I am very excited with this book and DVD set and can't wait to get started learning how to do mixed media and create beautiful art.
