As the parent of a high school student who works very hard and is seldom truly satisfied with her academic performance, I can at least breathe a sigh of relief that she doesn't fall into the official category of an overachiever. Still, the stories of these students drew me in as both an objective and subjective observer. These kids and their stories are emotionally riveting and I found myself caring a great deal about each of them -- and as a parent also worrying not just a little bit about their physical, mental and emotional health -- and holding my breath in the hope that each student would truly achieve his or her goals without completely breaking down. I did find myself getting a little impatient with some of the students' various and too-numerous extra-curricular activities. Supposedly, colleges are looking at a student's quality of life outside the classroom as well as in the classroom, but in the end, most of these activities seemed to do more harm than good. One of the students still did not get into her 1st choice school in spite of her busy life outside the classroom, and for the rest, the vast majority of those outside activities didn't figure significantly into the final outcomes. In fact, APFrank's story should show that a lot of outside activities are not all that necessary in the end. Most of the kids were not able to adequately cope with all their activities, missing classes, turning homework in late, failing exams, even; yet not one parent or counselor steps forward and says "Enough is enough." Their parents really dropped the ball in this instance.I did think the sampling of students was far too narrow, and I wished she had explored more in depth other high schools, both public and private. There are super-driven kids out there who don't have the same IQ power, or the same access to academic, financial and political resources these Whitman students do. I am certainly interested in knowing how less-fortunate students compensate and adjust their goals and expectations. OTOH, by choosing to follow a fewer number of students and in an environment with which she was much more familiar, Ms. Robbins is able to communicate her understanding and empathy and go into more depth behind-the-scenes with their individual stories. To be fair, she does choose quite a few different types of students, those who are driven from within and those who are pressured by outside expectations. Unfortunately, the follow-ups on the students' post high school lives that Ms. Robbins claims is available on her website are missing. She may have had very good intentions as the book went to press, but she was unable to deliver. There is only one student follow up available on her website.Still, I think it's a mistake to assume that super-driven, overachieving students is some kind of current "epidemic." There are no more of these obsessive students now than there were 30 years ago when I was in high school. I knew quite a few of them, even if I wasn't one myself. What makes their stories stand out more now is the fact that more kids are attending college now than ever have in the past, and as a result, colleges and universities at all levels have become more expensive and more selective than ever. Actually, I think the LACK of performance-oriented achievers is a bigger concern. Too many kids these days think that they deserve high academic rewards for little or no work whatever. The kids feel entitled to top grades simply because they show up for class (and sometimes, even when they don't,) and not because they put in any effort to earn them.Nevertheless, I truly enjoyed this story at its face value and recommend it as interesting information. I have enjoyed several of Ms. Robbins other books as well and I intend to read the rest of them.

Sadly, this book did not provide any new insights or much information of interest to this reader. I purchased it having gone through the college admissions process with our two kids during the past couple of years. (Mom & Dad were lucky enough to graduate from a super-selective, super-endowed university in the "H-Y-P-S" category, way back in the late 70s, but both parents fled the rat-race in our early 20s to pursue work we thought to be interesting & rewarding, rather than fanatically pursuing money, power, and prestige unto the grave.)While we appreciate the advantages and luxuries that such top schools can provide, and wanted our kids to enjoy them, we have never come close to being the caricatures described in this book, nor are our kids, who both attend great colleges and are enjoying what they have to offer.The book is written in the tone of a breathless "Cosmopolitan" feature article, and after reading the first few chapters and some skipping around the rest of the book, I simply found nothing that would compel me to keep reading it. The same points are made over and over, but no real insight or thoughtfulness comes through. A reader with any sophistication or experience of the issues explored in the book gets that "Overachieverism" -- a cumbersome term that is presumably the author's neologism -- is a pernicious thing. "AP Frank" -- the stereotypical Asian nerd who takes every possible AP class, and aces them all, and gets into Harvard, with his monstrously overbearing Korean mother breathing down his neck every inch of the way from the womb to Harvard Yard, is such a caricature that one wonders if the young man really exists, or is just a composite character.Having just run this gauntlet with our kids, I want to know what the gatekeepers and other persons in a position to lead us out of the current rat-race-tocracy are doing to address the problem, which is really a deeply-rooted cultural phenomenon. It has developed since the most selective universities turned the corner in the 60s from being old-boys clubs for families of multi-generational wealth, to being the allegedly more meritocratic institutions of today. In so doing, we've traded one set of problems for another.I happened to become close friends with Harvard Law's dean of admissions after she read a satire on law school admissions I wrote for my college newspaper. She was a wonderful woman of great wit and warmth -- and I wonder what she'd think of how the admissions game has evolved since her untimely death in the early 90s. I suspect she would have been a leader in trying to counteract the toxic trends that have developed in the intervening years.This reader would enjoy a thoughtful book that explores what can be done to remedy the situation, but found nothing in this book but bromides and platitudes.

Surprisingly biased.I’m not pleased with this book.I purchased it to read with my children to give them an objective overview of the presidents.But, I’m sorry to say, it is definitely biased against recent republican presidents.I expected better.

When I saw the "National Geographic" label, I had high hopes as I ordered this book for my class. Unfortunately, this book is a rather traditional, one-sided perspective on American history as it occurred around each presidential administration. If you want basic facts on the presidents, this book is ok. However, if you're looking for a book that broadens beyond white male Americans in each age of U.S. development, this is not the book for you. There is minimal mention of women, children, people of color or Native Americans. Yes, most of the presidents have been older white men. However, broader America has always been a rich patchwork of ethnic diversity that receives, unfortunately, minimal mention in this book.

Love this book for our homeschool classroom! A great overview of each president with little tidbits of other history and milestones sprinkled throughout. My 9 year old son read this cover to cover and I was amazed at his retention! The full color and full-page pictures/portraits of the presidents are very nice visuals and the personal, political, and historical overviews make for a great supplement to any American History curriculum.

Book, somewhat hard to rate....It is exactly what I thought I was ordering. 5 stars.

Bought this for my 9 year old history buff. Now I get quizzed regularly about our presidential history and he enjoys teaching me new things! Fantatsic book.

I greatly respect and admire Dr. Hyman and the work he is doing to prevent and reverse diabesity. He is a public health hero, in my opinion. But this cookbook has far too many exotic, expensive, and flat-out bizarre ingredients. There are 175 recipes here created by a celebrity chef and I eagerly pored over every one. At the end, I would make less than 10% of them - not nearly enough for this cookbook to earn a place in my kitchen. I didn't expect to love every recipe - no cookbook can do that - but I certainly expected to be inspired to try more than a mere 10%. Here are some recipe titles:- Baked Marinated Tempeh with Shiitake-Turnip-Chard Hash- Kimchi and Sweet Potato Fish Cakes with Cabbage-Apple Slaw- Slow-Cooked Duck Legs with Spiced Cherry Sauce and White Bean PureeI could go on and on. I LOVE trying new recipes and I LOVE experimenting with new flavors. But most of these recipes are downright unappetizing. There are only 32 color photographs for 175 recipes - not nearly enough to whet my interest. And talk about time consuming! Far too many of these recipes take far too long to prepare - there are some (other than smoothies or quick breakfasts) that you can get on the table in 30 minutes or so, but far too few; between the prep time and the cooking time, you're looking at way more than 30 minutes, and some, such as the bone broths (which form the basis of other recipes) take 15 to 27 HOURS. For some recipes, you're expected to make your own nut milk (you'll have to purchase a nut-milk bag). So this book is deeply disappointing. Is our health worth the time and cost? So if you're looking to expand your repertoire, as I was, this didn't do it for me. And if you're new to this way of cooking, it will be overwhelming. Dried kelp? Kelp noodles? Kelp powder? Teff flour? Reishi mushroom capsules? Nori? Spirulina? Bee pollen? Just some of the many ingredients you'll have to either purchase online or at Whole Foods or a health food store. I heartily applaud Dr. Hyman's effort here, so A for effort, but C- for execution.

Good diet. I am slowly adjusting my diet to the suggestions in the book. I increased fat, decreased carbs and eliminated white sugar and fruit juices. which helped me to lose 15lbs. in 30 days. My mind is clearer, I have a little more energy and my emotions are more on the positive side. Pretty good for a 69yr. old man with PTSD and severe health issues for the last six years.

My husband and I are just beginning to follow Dr. Hyman' dietary program. As a person with both genetically high cholesterol and familial heart problems, I so far have found this a better way of eating than any other heart diet.

This is one the best cookbooks I own. It's versatile and well-organized. For most recipes, if you don't have the unusual ingredients, you can skip them or use a substitute. It'd be even better if Hyman suggested what you could replace hard to find ingredients with (for example, I haven't had time to make the extra trip to the health foods store for spirulina or mirin).However, the recipes need work. The Meatloaf with Italian Seasoning recipe took over twice as long as stated to reach temp - an hour instead of 15-20 minutes. I doubled the Smoky Ketchup, yet it took three times as long to cook (and never did reach a ketchup-y consistency). The Cherry-Hemp Smoothie was too thin and watery. On the other hand, the Ginger-Tamari Baked Tofu was delicious (I used low-sodium soy sauce and skipped the mirin). I've made a few things that were hard to screw up, but I'm a little nervous about making the sweet potato bread after the other issues.

I liked the first book. But the cookbook recipes have many ingredients I did not care for. I live in a small town I do not believe I could find many of them . Did not find many I would even try.

The recipes that I have tried were good. But he uses ingredients that are not available in our small town grocery stores.

This guy has opened my eyes on food and how the body utilizes fat and carbs. Easy to read, informative, and an invaluable adjunct to a new way of eating! It's working for me!

Well written easy to read book. I was skeptical when I heard Dr. Marc on public tv, but I researched the science and it's no kidding. Results were measurable in a very short time. Highly recommended.

I learn that on this diet, I restrict carbohydrates that the body enters a metabolic state known as ketosis. This book as well discusses the amazing crock-pot. It includes delicious and healthy recipes that we can enjoy. The tips and tricks are well explain which is great. I enjoy reading this book.

I’ve made so many of these recipes that I couldn’t even think about picking a favorite. Before Jack Johns, I’d never tried Korean cuisine. Now it’s a part of my everyday life. If you’re tired of the same old hamburgers and spaghetti and grilled chicken breasts, pick up this book and prepare to have your culinary mind blown. I’d recommend starting with the Fire Chicken.

Jack Johnson did an amazing work here, trying to adapt Korean cooking to the American demands. I love trying new foods and I admit that I know very little about Korean cuisine but I love spicy creative dishes so it was really easy to get in the mood of this cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow and the final results look delicious once you prepare them and get on the table. Most of the recipes are nice and short, they call for very few ingredients and need little time to be prepared. The table of contents is divided into different sections so you should get through all of them to realize the greatness of this cookbook.

I really miss living in Korea, and this cookbook offers really simple and easy-to-follow recipes. It’s a nice way to fix loads of my favorite dishes ever. It can be a little bit hard to follow these recipes if you don't have specific ingredients for them, so get ready to move closer to the Korean market (joke) or simply make your weekend grocery shopping a little bit longer by visiting markets you've never visited before. Some dishes may require use of special equipment, but there are different ways around if you're interested in the meal itself.

Some people say, it's too authentic. I really can't tell what's so authentic or hard to reproduce in roasted branzino, or fried cheese, or tomato soup. I love these easy and homely recipes - they remind me of timen whe I've been living not far from the Korean restaurant, and the smells of it were spreading around the neighbourhood. Simple and affordable cooking, suitable for American tastes.

I'm not that big of a fan, since Koren cooking will always be some kind of mistery to me but I think this is a nice American adaptation of what could have been Korean cooking at home. Recipes are easy to understand. Be prepared to the fact that some of the ingredients can be found exclusively on the Korean markets.

This book is the best korean cookbook i have ever found. I am half korean and grew up on korean dishes, but my mom could never translate measurement amounts other than by showing me how much she scoops by hand. It seems a little too authentic for American tastes. I looked through the book to find something to make but was put off by the ingredients. Too many odd seafood items, too many "authentic" seasonings. I want one that is tamed down for the American palate.
