About James RollinsJAMES ROLLINS is a #1 New York Times bestselling author of international thrillers that have been translated into more than forty languages. Known for unveiling unseen worlds, scientific breakthroughs, and historical secrets, Rollins' knack for breakneck pacing and stunning originality has been hailed by critics and embraced by scores of millions of readers around the world. The Critics RaveThe New York Times says that his "roguish charm comes from his efforts to persuade readers the story is credible [through] real-life sources for his novel's science, history and geography." Rollins' rare blend of action, suspense, and knowledge was also mentioned by the Huffington Post, which stated that "After Crichton passed away in 2008 he clearly passed the baton to James Rollins, who like Crichton, is a renaissance man."NPR calls his work "adventurous and enormously engrossing..." and the New York Journal of Books had this to say: "If you're a fan of smart, entertaining adventure fiction, this is your summer beach read writ large....All the science, all the history, and all the locations are masterfully intertwined. The characters are multi-dimensional. And the story is, well, a corker."The Story Teller's StoryAs a boy immersed in the scientific adventures of Doc Savage, the wonders of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, and pulps such as The Shadow, The Spider, and The Avenger, James Rollins decided he wanted to be a writer. He honed his storytelling skills early, spinning elaborate tales that were often at the heart of pranks played on his brothers and sisters. Before he would set heroes and villains on harrowing adventures, Rollins embarked on a career in veterinary medicine, graduating from the University of Missouri and establishing a successful veterinary practice. This hands-on knowledge of medicine and science helps shape the research and scientific speculation that set James Rollins books apart.Explosive Page-Turning AdventuresThe exotic locales of James Rollins novels have emerged as a hybrid between imagination, research, and his extensive travels throughout the United States and Europe, as well as New Zealand, the South Pacific, China, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America. Recent jaunts include book tours and stops across the country and several European nations to give talks, seminars, and media interviews. In recent years, much of James' travel has involved meeting readers in small and large groups, at writing and fan conferences, and even aboard seagoing "seminars." James' mentoring and coaching skills have made him a sought after writing instructor and guest speaker for workshops, symposia, conventions, and other forums throughout the country.James Rollins is the author of nine thrillers in the bestselling Sigma Force series (Sandstorm, Map of Bones, Black Order, The Judas Strain, The Last Oracle, The Doomsday Key, The Devil Colony, Bloodline, and The Eye of God); six individual adventure thrillers; and the Jake Ransom middle grade series (Jake Ransom and the Skull King's Shadow, Jake Ransom and the Howling Sphinx.)

Imagine, if you will, that, some day in the future, a descendent of one of those men who persecuted witches of Salem, Massachusetts, has created a computer that can think and reason at such a skill that it is a million times smarter than the smartest human being. What good, or what evil, might that bring forth? In some oblique way, this book strikes me as a not so far-fetched version of a sequel to Stephen King’s ‘The Stand.’ By that I do not mean to state that this features the same sort of characters or plot as my favorite work by the master of horror. Rather, this is a fantasy based upon facts, history and a conjecture about where humanity is headed due to the advances in artificial intelligence.Of course, the actual reality that will come will be wildly different from that imagined by this author, so it may be unwise to fear the future. But, this book takes such a penetrating look at our past that, were it not for the history we did preserve, there are precious few who could have seriously imagined that what our forefathers did do would ever have actually happened. I, for one, will never again look at witchcraft quite the same way I did before cracking open this superb novel.Further, I will never again make snide comments regarding faith healers or ‘good witches.’ It was not merely the novel that has opened my eyes, but it is the information provided by Rollins as an introduction, and as an explanation following the fictional story. Bravo! Now, on with my review…POV: Third person. But, if I dare say, the writer has the main character’s thoughts for us placed in italics, so, one could state that first person is sprinkled into the third person narrative, making for a more compelling and more dynamic novel.BLUSH FACTOR: To be sure, there are a few eff-words. Only six when I checked using the search option. I know a few will shy away from this novel, but, honestly, I don’t recommend that. The story content is just simply too compelling.WRITING & EDITING: Professional as would be expected with the higher list price for a Kindle Edition. I recommend also getting the Audible edition, as it is a first-rate production narrated by Christian Baskous brings all the greatest essence of the writing forward for us to contemplate. This Action-Adventure will dare you to reconsider humanity’s place. In fact, it will have you reconsidering a great deal more than that, but only if you actually read it or listen to the Audible Edition.CLIFFHANGER ENDING: No, but he seems to have left the door open for a sequel. PLEASE, bring us another novel with this premise.Excerpt:‘…Bearing silent witness from the computer lab, Mara had heard the alarming words of the man who led the attack: Xénese must never be. It is an abomination, born of sorcery and filth.Breathing hard, she stared over to the second black case on the floor. It lay open, its inner padding cradling a sphere that Carly jokingly called the soccer ball. It was not a bad analogy. The device was indeed the size of a regulation ball. Similarly, hexagonal plates covered its surface. But rather than made up of stitched leather, the device consisted of alternating hexagonal plates of titanium and diamond-hard sapphire crystal. In a moment of hubris, she had named the device Xénese, the Galician word for Genesis.Still, the name fit, considering her goal.To bring forth life from the cold vacuum of nothingness. Was it any wonder such an ambition attracted the wrong attention? She again pictured the attackers’ robes and blindfolds, heard their justification for murder, ripped from the Bible: Suffer not a witch to live.Anger steadied her hand. Charlotte and the others died because of Mara’s work, but she would not let their deaths be in vain. Determination spread through her. Up until now, she had been running scared, overwhelmed by grief. But she was done running. Only now did she feel secure enough to check on the status of her work. Still, a final worry remained. In her panicked haste to extract Xénese and its hard drives from the university’s Milipeia Cluster, she worried she may have irreparably damaged the program.Please. It’s Christmas morning. Grant me this one gift.Over the next hour, she daisy-chained the drives encoded with her program modules into her laptop. She checked each one and sighed with relief when everything seemed intact. Next, she powered up what Carly called “the soccer ball.†As electricity flowed through a conditioner into the device, its tiny sapphire windows brightened with an azure glow, marking the successful ignition of the tiny lasers inside.“Let there be light,†she whispered with a sad smile, remembering how often Dr. Carson had used that line from the Book of Genesis—and her mentor’s warning the day before their test run.Rollins, James. Crucible (Sigma Force Novels) . William Morrow. Kindle Edition.BOTTOM LINEThe author, in an afterword, claims there is more truth than fiction in this book. What is scary, for me, is that he may be correct. Although I do frequently read this author’s works, I’ve never really placed him so highly on my list of favorite writers. Until now. This is THAT enjoyable and stimulating. I only wish Rollins had kept this story going on for another thousand pages. No worry, I do expect a sequel…Five stars out of five. Well, actually 4-1/2, as it is too short.
For once, I can agree with the blurb for this novel. Normally the blurb does not describe the text accurately for me. This was spot on and it is a heart pounding novel of intense action, a historical mystery dating back to the Spanish Inquisition and science concerning Artificial Intelligence. The medieval text 'The Hammer of Witches' (1487) is delineated in depth and the reader is introduced to the world of witchcraft. For me, my knowledge was negligible until I read these portions. The action throughout is intense and does not stop from the beginning until the end. My advice is to buckle up your seat belt and hang on for the ride....The Artificial Intelligence portion of the novel is indeed mind boggling. I fear that we are almost there. I had never heard of the AI Eurisko previously nor his inventor Lenat. This was ten years ago and I can only imagine how far this science has advanced in a decade.Sigma Force certainly had a mystery on their hands and Commander Grey Pierce rises to the occasion with the team. Loved Mara and her contributions to the science portion. Wow, just wow.....The entire novel is incredible and the plot is well defined. In addition, the characters were fleshed out well My goodness, what a ride for me on a bitterly cold day in Vermont.Just superlative writing and am looking forward to others written by this author. Most highly recommended.
I’ve been reading Rollins for years. This book, however, knocked everything he’s ever published right out of the park. Imagine if artificial intelligence was so sophisticated it could literally learn what we do in a lifetime in just seconds. And what if that AI was put in the wrong hands? In this case, it’s a group that descends from a secret society of witch hunters who use Malleus Maleficarum (the Hammer of Witches) as their Bible. FYI: It’s a real book. To them AI is the new witchcraft. It starts out with quite the bang as Monk and Gray’s world is ripped out from under them in a very personal way. Then a genius girl who developed a powerful AI is targeted after a massacre takes place. I don’t want to get into too many details, here. But I do not normally go for artificial intelligence type stuff. I slept through I-Robot and had no interest in other movies of the same genre. This, though, gripped me from beginning to end. Never did I expect to be cheering on a digital intelligence. But I was. Just a terrific book.
I automatically order every Rollins novel to be delivered to my Kindle upon publication. One more of this caliber and I will require a sample first. While the premise was intriguing, the excess repetition rapidly became boring and the conclusion obvious. I understand the convention he was using in the development of Eve's intelligence, but a couple of examples would have sufficed.Oh well, an occasional disappointment is inevitable. This is the first of his novels not to rate five stars from me so he is still on auto delivery for now.
4 * (Rounded up from 3.5)I've read all of Rollins' books and enjoy the characters of his Sigma Force novels. But this one didn't live up to my expectations.I always appreciate the science that Rollins brings to his work, but (in my opinion) it overwhelms the realism of his storyline in Crucible. (I realize that the book is about AI—artificial intelligence—gone awry, but this is FICTION, so I want a STORY.) The chapters in which he relates Eve's thinking (Eve is the AI persona) distracted me from the characters that attract me to his books in the first place. It's almost as if Rollins is using these AI chapters as a glue to bind the rocking thriller scenes instead of trying to develop the story. It's not that Crucible is a BAD Sigma Force novel, but it disappointed me. I'll read the next installment in this series, hoping that it's full of more humanity, and less scientific razzle-dazzle.
