This was a very cheap book and it shows. Apparently they did not spend any money on an editor. There are a LOT of mistakes in it, which is bad for a foreign-language guide book. For example: in Chapter 2, #201 and 202, it translates "To the right" as: "a gauche". Then it translates "to the left" as: "a droite".It is the other way around. "To the right" is "a droite" in French, not "a gauche". "A gauche" means LEFT. " Droite" is RIGHT.So if you followed this guide book translation, you would end up going left instead of right. That could result in some serious problems getting around!There were a bunch of mistakes like that.I wish I hadn't bought it. My French is good enough to have picked up some of these mistakes, but I still need a phrase guidebook to help me. I plan to buy a different phrase book.
I used this book as a refresher on french during the flight. It was about the perfect length for a quick review. The pronunciation guides worked for me -- since I have previously taken french classes (although decades ago). I did not try using it as an "on the spot" translator, so can't comment on its effectiveness for that purpose.I found two small but very important typos: 201 and 202 (right and left) are turned around (to the right should be a droite and to the left should be a gauche). Hope they fix this up soon or someone could be sent off in the wrong direction!
we bought it because it was cheap, and only a little over 100 pages. But it turned out to be very handy while in France for 2 weeks. Well organized, as the chapters are based on the activity--eating, shopping, travel, etc. So you can flip quickly to the page you need. It also gives you phonetic pronunciation for all of the phrases. If most French people didn't already speak english fairly well, I wouldn't have survived without this book.
A French phrase book that is ease to use at last. It is divided by subject and the question/phrase in English first, follow by French and a pronunciation guide. At last my last two either had the French first (Look up 'pass the salt' if you don't know the French word to begin with.) Or no pronunciation (my WWII book) and watch them laugh as you mangle the words.
Even as a beginner, I caught several mistakes throughout this book. That said, I still appreciate it for the ease of use, how it was organized and usefulness. Very affordable and useful. If it cost more, I think the errors would be more glaring. As it is, I found it useful for our upcoming trip to France.
I like that it is compact, will fit in my travel purse, and helps you pronounce the words exactly! I can't wait to use it when I go to Paris!
If you want a useful little book to take with you in French speaking countries than this is it. It is well organized and for a novice it's perfect.
This has all you need to know if you are traveling on vacation. small enough so that you aren't flipping through so much text to find what you need.
